How does the Uponor AquaSAFE™ Fire Sprinkler System work?
Uponor AquaSAFE™ is a multipurpose system which means it is combined with a home’s cold-water plumbing system. It uses the same Uponor AquaPEX® tubing that provides potable water to the plumbing fixtures in a home so there is always a ready supply of water to the sprinkler heads. The system eliminates stagnant water so it doesn’t require check valves or backflow preventers.

What’s the difference between a multipurpose and a standalone system?
The two main options for residential fire sprinklers include multipurpose systems featuring flexible crosslinked polyethylene (PEX) tubing and standalone systems using rigid chlorinated polyvinyl chloride (CPVC) pipe. A multipurpose system incorporates a home’s cold-water plumbing system with the fire sprinkler system, while a standalone system is separate from the home’s plumbing system.

What’s the difference between PEX and CPVC?
Crosslinked polyethylene (PEX) and chlorinated polyvinyl chloride (CPVC) are both used for fire sprinkler systems. The PEX manufacturing process chemically joins individual polyethylene molecules through an extrusion process to create a highly flexible tubing product. With CPVC, the manufacturing process starts with PVC resin and adds additional chlorine molecules, which creates a much more rigid tubing product.

While both products are listed to their own respective ASTM standards for use in fire sprinkler systems, PEX provides superior features, installation characteristics and longevity. For example, PEX systems offer:

Is Uponor PEX chlorine-resistant?
In recent years, ASTM F876 and ASTM F877 have been refined to incorporate benchmarks for chlorine resistance. Under certain conditions, a high concentration of chlorine can contribute to the oxidation of plastics. This, in turn, can affect service life. The upgraded ASTM standards provide an additional level of assurance that PEX tubing manufactured to these standards can withstand the potential oxidative effects of heavily chlorinated water.
