Top Questions

What type of fittings does Ecoflex use?
• Ecoflex Thermal and Potable PEX products up to 2" can use Uponor’s proven ProPEX® fitting system.
• All sizes of Ecoflex Thermal and Potable PEX can use Uponor’s WIPEX™ brass compression fittings.
• Ecoflex Potable HDPE products can use any industry-standard SDR11 HDPE fitting method.

What are ProPEX® fittings?
Uponor’s unique ProPEX® cold-expansion fittings capitalize on the shape memory of Uponor PEX-a tubing. ProPEX connections require the use of one simple tool to make fast, strong, solid connections that hold tight in strength tests with up to 1,000 pounds of force, without the use of torches, glues, solvents or gauges.

How are ProPEX fittings made?
To make a ProPEX connection, simply place a ProPEX Ring on the end of the tubing and expand the tubing and ring with an expansion tool. After the tubing and ring are expanded, place a fitting in the tubing and wait a few minutes for the tubing and ring to shrink back to their original shape. It’s that simple. The connection is now ready to be safely air or water tested.

What are WIPEX™ fittings?
Extensively used in North America and Europe, especially for underground pre-insulated pipe systems, WIPEX fittings are manufactured from dezincification-resistant (DZR) brass, and are specifically designed for connecting 1" to 4" Uponor PEX tubing. The WIPEX fitting features an eccentric outer sleeve — for easier grip and an even force when inserting the tubing — and an inner sleeve with a threaded profile and O-ring to ensure a secure, tight seal.

How are WIPEX fittings made?
To create the fitting, first chamfer the inside of the tubing, then use a pair of pliers to dismount the outer sleeve and place it on the tubing. Then, mount the tubing on the inner sleeve and tighten the fitting with a wrench. For complete instructions, refer to the WIPEX Fittings Instruction Sheet.

What is the maximum operating pressure and temperature for WIPEX fittings?
The maximum operating pressure and temperature for WIPEX fittings is 87 psi at 203°F.

What tools are required for WIPEX fittings?
WIPEX fittings only require a chamfering tool, a simple pair of pliers and a wrench.

Are WIPEX fittings approved for potable water use?
Yes, WIPEX fittings are listed for compliance to NSF 61 for potable water use.

What is Ecoflex?
Ecoflex is a pre-insulated pipe system at its best — versatile, flexible and durable. The pipe consists of Wirsbo hePEX™, Uponor AquaPEX® or HDPE tubing encased in closed-cell, PEX foam insulation and covered by a watertight, corrugated HDPE jacket.

Why should I consider using Ecoflex?
The unique properties of Ecoflex make it ideal for commercial and residential applications that require insulated underground piping. These lightweight, flexible, pre-insulated pipes are strong enough to tackle any application, yet install easily and quickly. The long coil lengths eliminate most buried connections, saving time and money while also limiting liability concerns.

What kind of services does Uponor provide for the Ecoflex system?
Uponor Technical Services in the United States (888.594.7726) and Canada (888.994.7726) can provide assistance with quotes and designs as well as answer questions regarding the product and solutions.

Are there different types of tubing in Ecoflex?
Yes. Ecoflex Thermal Single and Twin feature Wirsbo hePEX™ tubing that has an oxygen-diffusion barrier. Ecoflex Potable PEX features Uponor AquaPEX® tubing. Ecoflex Potable HDPE uses high-density polyethylene tubing.

What tubing sizes are available with Ecoflex?
• Thermal Single (Wirsbo hePEX) tubing is available in 1", 1¼", 1½", 2", 2½", 3", 3½" and 4" sizes.
• Thermal Twin (Wirsbo hePEX) tubing is available in 1", 1¼", 1½", 2" and 2½" sizes.
• Potable PEX (Uponor AquaPEX) tubing is available in 1", 1¼", 1½", 2" and 3" sizes.
• Potable HDPE is available in ¾", 1", 1¼", 1½", 2", 3" and 4" sizes.

What is the longest coil length available in ASTM sizes?
Ecoflex comes in 600' coil lengths for 1" PEX service pipe, 500' coil lengths for 1¼" service pipe and 300' coil lengths for 1½" service pipe and larger. Refer to the Uponor Product Catalog and Ecoflex Complete Catalog Supplement for the entire product offering.

Do I need to buy full coil lengths?
No. Uponor and some distributors provide a cut-to-length service for custom lengths.
