Bob Sparks has accepted the position of Commercial Sales Manager – West. Bob’s strong technical background and extensive field experience makes him a great fit for this role. In his new role, Bob will lead the development of the commercial sales strategy in the Western region, with a strong focus on commercial plumbing. Bob will then work closely with reps and sales managers to implement the strategy and drive commercial plumbing sales through sales calls on targeted mechanical contractors and engineers, as well as identifying, selling and supporting targeted commercial projects. Bob will continue to help with residential sprinkler needs in the territory, until a suitable replacement can be found. Please congratulate Bob on his new role.

Joe Alahverde recently joined Uponor as commercial sales manager – East reporting to Mike Donleavy, senior sales manager – east. Alahverde will lead the development of the commercial sales strategy in the eastern region, with a strong focus on commercial plumbing. He will work closely with the reps and sales managers to implement the strategy. Alahverde will drive commercial sales through sales calls on targeted mechanical contractors and engineers, as well as identifying, selling and supporting targeted commercial projects.

Alahverde has many years of experience in the commercial plumbing industry and has a large network of engineer contacts in the east region. Most recently, he was the district sales manager for commercial/residential decorative plumbing products at Toto USA.

Uponor’s Devin Abellon Named ASHRAE Distinguished Lecturer

Devin Abellon, business development manager for Uponor Engineering Services, was recently named a Distinguished Lecturer for the American Society of Heating, Refrigerating and Air-Conditioning Engineers (ASHRAE). As a Distinguished Lecturer, Abellon joins a select group of 71 professionals worldwide that provide ASHRAE chapters, student branches and other organizations with lecturers on relevant subjects of interest to ASHRAE members and guests. In July 2011, his course “Embedded Tube Radiant Systems to Maximize LEED® Points” was approved for one continuing education hour by the Green Building Certification Institute (GBCI) of the United States Green Building Council (USGBC). The course teaches how in-slab hydronic radiant systems can be used as part of an energy-efficient design solution to maximize Energy and Atmosphere credits for LEED certification.

Changes in 100-ft. Coils on Boxed Pallets

Customers will soon see changes in how we ship 100-ft. tubing coils. Instead of stacking them vertically, we'll stack them horizontally.

Why are we doing this?
• Easier for customers to pull the coils out of the box.
• The coil's outside dimensions will match our other standard coil sizes (i.e., you can stack 100-ft. and 300-ft. together).
• Allows Uponor to make these coils on multiple types of recoil equipment (Currently, we can only use one recoiler when packaging vertically.)
• Easier to package since we'll eventually eliminate the box (i.e., shrinkwrap the pallet)

Brent Kotula awarded a NICET Level IV certification

This is quite an achievement as it takes a minimum of 10 years of experience in the field, along with many tests to obtain this level of certification.

Uponor’s Eric Skare Accepted to UL 1821 Standards Technical Panel for Fire Protection

Eric Skare, product manager of Fire Safety at Uponor, was recently accepted to the Underwriters Laboratories, Inc. (UL) Standards Technical Panel (STP) for 1821, the standard for safety on Thermoplastic Sprinkler Pipe and Fittings for Fire Protection Service. The STP serves as the consensus body to review and vote on proposals to UL standards prior to publication. “Eric’s acceptance onto this important panel further establishes Uponor’s support of, and contribution to, the fire protection industry,” says Jayson Drake, senior product manager of Plumbing and Fire Safety at Uponor.

Sibley Students Visit Uponor to Learn about PEX

On Feb. 14, more than 60 pre-engineering students from Henry Sibley High School in Mendota Heights, Minn., visited the Uponor North American headquarters in Apple Valley, Minn., to learn about new innovations in radiant heating and cooling, as well as plumbing and fire sprinkler systems, using crosslinked polyethylene (PEX) tubing. The students’ visit was in conjunction with a push to encourage more science and technology education in Minnesota schools. Senator Amy Klobuchar (D-Minn.), who visited Uponor on Jan. 11 to promote business innovation, also spoke in an online column about the importance of technical schools and the STEM (science, technology, engineering and math) network in Minnesota.

Bill Gray Named President of Uponor North America

Uponor has named Bill Gray president of Uponor North America, effective Feb. 15, 2012. He is also a member of the Uponor Group executive committee. Gray has served as the vice president for UNA Sales since June 2011, where he was responsible for the leadership of all Uponor North American sales efforts in the U.S. and Canada. Previously, he was general manager for Uponor Ltd. in Canada for three years where he oversaw all Canadian operations, including sales, marketing, demand management and technical and customer service.

Part numbers will not change; however, some customers may need to update their ordering system to reflect the package quantity change. Uponor Expands into Mexico, Central America, Caribbean with VMS

Effective January 2012, Uponor has expanded its reach into Mexico, Central America and the Caribbean with Victory Management Solutions, Inc. (VMS). VMS will rep Uponor radiant heating and cooling, plumbing and fire sprinkler systems for commercial and residential applications.

“With this new partnership, we’re well positioned to educate a new market that has very little exposure to PEX products and systems,” says Bill Gray, vice president, Uponor Sales. “VMS is well known for supporting project work and will help us pursue opportunities that are ideal for our radiant heating and cooling, plumbing and fire sprinkler systems.”

Maryland’s Lead-free Plumbing Law in Effect Jan. 1, 2012

Effective Jan. 1, 2012, Maryland’s No-Lead Law, HB372, prohibits manufacturers and importers from selling and contractors from installing potable-water plumbing products that contain more than 0.25% weighted average lead content on wetted surfaces. Note that a Federal law will come into effect on Jan. 4, 2014 that amends the Safe Drinking Water Act and will require all 50 states to become lead free.

VOC-CO2 Sensor Product Bulletin Posted

Uponor is changing the design of the VOC-CO2 Indoor Air Quality Sensor (A9010201) in the Climate Cŏntrol™ Network System. The new sensor will no longer require a Cat5 wire to connect the sensor to the Heat Recovery Ventilator (HRV) Control (A9011200). Please see the VOC-CO2 Sensor Product Bulletin for complete details. We have also updated the HRV Control Instruction Sheet to reflect the new wiring instructions.
